We're thinking of starting a family in the next couple years and wonder how welcome we would be. I'd appreciate hearing from other gay families in the area about their experience. How friendly is the area to interfaith couples I'm Episcopalian; my partner is Wiccan? What's the political mix? We're tired of living in the south where democrats or anyone who is "different" is reviled, so we're trying to get to know places pretty well before making a decision about where we move.
From what I've learned during my two-year tenure on this forum, Lancaster County the suburbs are very socially conservative while Lancaster the city itself is a Democratic stronghold. My favorite community in that area is Lititz, not far north of the city limits, but there have been thre on here with a lot of people saying very negative things about the rudeness and narrow-mindedness of those who reside in Lititz. I've had my fair share of people screaming slurs at me, but I've only felt threatened with physical harm once.
PA overall is not a very liberal state we're the "red"-headed step child of the otherwise uber-liberal Northeastbut the odds of having a KKK rally assemble on your front lawn in East Lampeter Township are about as great as President Bush being rated world's most effective leader.
Lancaster city has a small but very liberal, artsy scene in the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. From what I understand, there is also a small but growing gay scene not that you are probably into that, but it does exist. Unfortunately, as soon as you head a couple miles outside of the city you are in an uber-conservative suburban wasteland.
Harrisburg, about 40 minutes northwest, is known for its much larger gay scene and even its own gayborhood. There was just an article about a lesbian couple in the area starting a family in the newspaper a few months ago.
No offense, but, get over yourself, no one cares, and no one has to know.
But, if you feel the irrepressible urge to bellow it out from the rooftops, I think you'll be fine in Lancaster. People mind their business there and are busy with their own lives to spend time worrying about the Lesbian couple next door. There's a lesbian couple that lives close to us and no one says a word about them. You'll have more trouble being accepted because you're an outsider then because you're gay.
Courage & authenticity for all

I've also read numerious stories of gay couple's houses and cars beign vandalized because of their sexual orientation so it's not a bad idea to scope out an area before moving.
There's no harm with somebody coming on here asking a question without having to have a snarky response. I'm not trying to be snarky myself but don't feel the response was very nice or needed but I guess you are free to state your opinions. I wish you well in your future move. I do appreciate the defense. Over the years I've taken to just ignoring those kinds of posts.
There's not much point to arguing with that kind of thing. I also appreciate the info people have left here.
